Red Queen book review

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard “I tend to think the 'next big thing' label can be more curse than blessing, but I'm very excited for the release of Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. One is fantasy and the other is science fiction, but both promise powerful characters and the kind of intricate worlds readers love to get lost in.” — ...

Title: Red Queen

Series: The Red Queen series

Number in series: 1

Author: Victoria Aveyard

Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction

Plot: Mare Barrow lives in a world of red and silver blood. Those with red blood are common people and are treated like slaves. Those with silver blood have special powers that give them authority to rule.
When The King and Queen discover that Mare has a special power, even though she is a red blood, they force her into pretending to be a silver blood. Can Mare find a way to bring equality to her country and keep her family safe?

My thoughts:

This book started out really slow. So slow I had almost decided to quit reading it.
I changed my mind, though, and kept on reading it.
By the middle of the book I was so intrigued by the story I had a hard time putting it down. I couldn't even guess how it was going to end, which is not something you can say about a lot of YA Sci-fi.
I don't want to give you any spoilers, but the ending was pretty terrible. It had a plot twist that personally ruined the story for me.

Because of the ending and the content mentioned below I'm giving it a lower rating than I would have liked to.

Content: Graphic and gory violence is found throughout the book, making this book rather morbid.  H**l and d**n are used often. B****h and b****rd are used a few times each. Spiritualism is vaguely discussed.
Characters lie, cheat, and steal to get out of hard circumstances.

My rating: 2

  1. I've been wanting to try this one, and still would like to. But WHY do books have to have foul language?! It's not necessary, people, seriously. :-/

    2. I agree with you Grace and I'm glad you and Ella include the mention of language in both of your reviews because I don't have a desire to read books with language. They definitely don't need to add it since it's not necessary!

    1. Your welcome Rissi!

Although this isn't a favorite for me, personally, I know a lot of people love it. I hope you enjoy it when you read it and share your thoughts on it:)

    2. That's what I hear too. A lot of people do like it, others are kind of "meh" about it. I think some readers let the hype get to them so they expect that kind of greatness. I'll try to go in with lowered expectations and see what happens! :)

    3. Hype can play into how you view a book.
Who knows you may end up loving it- or not. Either way I do think it's worth a read just so you can find out if this series is for you or not.
