Dauntless book review
Title: Dauntless
Series: Valiant Hearts
Number in Series: 1
Author: Dina L. Sleiman
Genre: Christian Historical Fiction:
Plot: Merry Ellison, born the daughter of Baron, is now on outlaw. Merry and a group of village children scrap out a living for themselves in the Farthingale woods.
On a fateful day Merry sees Timothy Grey, whom she was once betrothed to and who now thinks she is dead. Timothy wants to help Merry, but may end up betraying her. Who can Merry trust?
My thoughts:
There isn't a lot of Christian Historical YA books out there, so I was eager to read this book.
I'm going to be honest, I was disappointed by it.
Merry and her group, called the Ghosts of Farthingale Forest, like Robin Hood, steal from rich noblemen in order to provide for themselves. I thought that because of that that this story would be one of redemption and repentance. It wasn't. All the characters justified stealing with statements like, 'We didn't have a choice' and 'God knows we have a good heart, so we aren't in the wrong'.
Also, their faith was based on a belief in God, not on a personal relationship with God.
There were, however, a few things I liked about this book.
It was historically accurate, so I enjoyed the descriptions of the buildings, clothing, and scenery.
All in all , not a favorite. I probably will not read the rest of this series.
My rating: 2.5

An anticipated book that leaves you disappointed is never a good day for a book nerd. Sorry this fell into that category for you, Ella. I'm hoping to like it... but we shall see. :)
